Fern Creek is a historic community in southeastern Jefferson County, Kentucky. Fern Creek is about 12 miles from downtown Louisville and is now considered a neighborhood of Louisville. The oldest structure in the area is a log home dating 1789. The earliest road through the area is Stage Road which connected Louisville to Bardstown, which then became Louisville and Bardstown Turnpike which then became Bardstown Road. The community was called "Stringtown" but was called Fern Creek by the late 1870s. The Jefferson County Fairgrounds were located in an area just off Bardstown Road from 1900 to 1928. There is still a Fairground Road at that location.
The area was agriculture for much of its history, but in the 1960s was developed as a suburb of Louisville. Continued growth in this area, with nearby Gene Snyder, offers shopping, dining, entertainment venues and businesses.
